Jaguar E-Type Jaguar E-Type V12 Serie 3 (1971-1974)

Ever since its first appearance at the 1961 Geneva motor show, the Jaguar E-Type has been instantly identifiable, all over the world, by its distinctive and highly individual styling. Enzo Ferrari called the E-Type „The most beautiful car ever made‘. In 2004, Sports Car International magazine placed the E-Type at „Number One“ on their list of Top Sports Cars of the 1960s and as recently as March 2008, the Jaguar E-Type ranked First in a The Daily Telegraph online list of the world‘s „100 most beautiful cars“ of all time.

10 years after its debut the Mk III was introduced which featured a brand new 5.3 litre V12 Jaguar Engine to supplement the 4.2 litre „XK“ motor, making Jaguar, Ferrari and Lamborghini the only three manufacturers offering a V12 road car. To match the improved performance it fitted with ventilated disc brakes at the front and air scoops at the rear. The track was 9 inches wider which, combined with wider wheels and „Anti-Dive“ front suspension geometry, gave the car much better roadholding, particularly under breaking. Lucas transistorised ignition and Adwest power assisted rack and pinion steering where now standard. The new version of the Roadster had a 2+2 wheelbase which made the car longer, roomier and increased the „Cubby Box“ luggage space. The „space“ in the fuel tank was also improved to 18 gallons (70 litres) capacity and the turning circle was improved to 36ft.

The V12 E-Type was at its best as a long-distance, high-speed Grand Tourer with automatic transmission and air-conditioning being two of the more popular options . There were few cars that could match its top speed and 120/130mph cruising ability, even amongst the exotica from Italy, and none at all the silence and smoothness of its V12 engine. Weighing only 80lb more than the cast-iron-block, 4.2-litre XK six, the new all-alloy, 5.3-litre V12 produced 272bhp, and although the weight had increased by about 20% the output of the silky smooth V12 engine was good enough for a top speed in excess of 140mph. Further good news was that the 0-100mph time of around 16 seconds made the V12 the fastestaccelerating E-Type ever.

The Mark III can be easily distinguished from its predecessors by a larger, chrome plated, cross-slatted radiator grill and flared wheel arches. The short wheelbase FHC body style was discontinued and the V12 was available only as a convertible or 2+2 coupé with both models now built on the longer-wheelbase floorplan. Cars for the US market were fitted with large projecting rubber bumper over-riders. On cars built 1973 these were only to be found on the front of the car, but in 1974 where fitted to both the front and rear all models to meet local 5 mph (8 km/h) impact regulations. Those on European models remained considerably smaller. US models also have side indicator repeats on the front and rear wings. There were also a limited number of six-cylinder Series 3 E-Types built and where featured in the initial sales literature. When leaving the factory the V12 Open Two Seater and V12 2+2 where originally fitted with Dunlop E70VR − 15 inch tyres on 15 × 6K wire or solid wheels.
